Rendez-vous at the Grand Rex in Paris
An iconic Parisian movie theatre since 1932, the Grand Rex towers over the Grands Boulevards. Its basement houses the Rex Club, a hotspot for Parisian nights out featuring electro music.
The Grand Rex, largest cinema in Europe
The Grand Rex is recognised from afar by its tall white Art Deco tower broadcasting its name, a sight that’s hard to miss from the Grands Boulevards.
A listed building since 1981, the Grand Rex was founded by the producer Jacques Haïk as a tribute to his love for the film industry. Today, the Rex stands above all as the largest cinema in Europe. One million spectators visit every year!
The Grande Salle
The Grand Rex is undoubtedly large. Spread over three levels (orchestra, mezzanine, and balcony); the Grande Salle can hold as many as 2650 spectators. Remarkable!
The decor mixes Italian balconies and statues in a truly wonderful manner. Louis Lumière himself was fascinated the first time he saw it for its official opening on the 8th December 1932. Look up at the starry sky painted on the ceiling, a metaphor for the movie stars.
Nowadays, the Grand Salle is used for shows like concerts, whereas film projections take place in one of 6 modern rooms holding 100 to 500 seats.
Let yourself be guided by “les Etoiles du Rex” (the Stars of the Rex) and explore backstage. This interactive route will guide you behind the giant screen in a panoramic elevator; you will discover a former projection room, and even be invited to put your voice onto a film extract.
The Rex Club: beneath the cinema lies a nightclub
In the basement of the cinema, dancers come to the Rex Club to party to electro music from big international DJs such as Miss Kittin and Boys Noize.
