Creation of 5 star ratings
1 star corresponds to an inexpensive residence. The minimum surface area for housing for two people is 10 square metres (107 sq.ft.), including kitchenette but excluding bathroom facilities.
2 and 3 stars correspond to mid-range residences, establishments which must have staff who speak at least one official language in addition to French. Reception must be open at least five hours a day (except for arrival days and off-days). The minimum surface for a 2-person lodging is 12 m² (129 sq. ft.), including kitchenette but excluding bathroom facilities, for a 2-star residence and 15 m² (161 sq. ft.), including kitchenette but excluding bathroom facilities, for a 3-star residence. The difference with a 1-star residence also concerns the surface area of public spaces, notably reception and lobby, which must be at least 60 m² (645 sq. ft.) for a 3-star establishment, compared to 20 m² (215 sq. ft.) for the lower rating.
4 and 5 stars correspond to high quality and superior quality residences. The rooms are spacious, being a minimum of 18 m² (193 sq. ft.), including kitchenette but excluding bathroom facilities, in a 4-star residence and 18 m² (193 sq. ft.), including kitchenette but excluding bathroom facilities, in a 5-star establishment. A 4-star residence must have staff who can speak two foreign languages (including English) in addition to French, while a 5-star establishment must provide services in three foreign languages in addition to French. Other services offered by superior quality establishments include having the beds made upon arrival, rooms cleaned at the end of the stay, and supply of bathroom linen.
