Coco Chanel - a fashion genius and revolutionaryYou think of a haute-couture fashion house immortalising the idea of classy, chic clothes.

Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, known as Coco Chanel was born 19th August 1883 in Saumur, France. Her father left at the tender age of 12, not long after the death of her mother. She was raised in an orphanage. She started out as a singer in variety shows, then in 1909 she opened a hat boutique in Deauville, France. In 1912 she opened her first shop at 31 rue Cambon, not far from Place Vendôme.

She was a modern, independant woman for her time, not afraid to express her opinions. Coco Chanel was daring and inventive, bringing new life to haute couture fashion. She revolutionised the narrow-minded fashion world. Before women wore corsets, an antiquated, conservative mode of dress. Then came Coco Chanel, who introduced the simpler, more comfortable, yet equally elegant dress. She completely changed the fashion world, making history. Coco Chanel died a legend 10th January 1971, in Paris.

Elegance and French chic

Coco Chanel introduced an innovate collection of jerseys, tweed, buttons, cardigans and eccentric jewellery, inspired by the clothes of her former lovers and her intense passion for the women's rights movement. Women wore their hair short, similar to the "urchin" hairstyle. They wore practical, plain and roomy clothing, such as short skirts and trousers.

Established in 1921, the renowned fragrance "Chanel No 5", the most widely sold perfume in the world, contributed to the brand's international fame. During an interview in 1954, when asked what she wore to bed, Marilyn Monroe, a 20th century legend responded: "five drops of Chanel No. 5.". The two Cs intertwined on the bottle is the famous symbol of the fashion house. With clean lines, simple designs, impeccable taste and fragrances which are bound to turn heads, you can always rely on Chanel for quality fashion and perfumes.
